A CLOSER LOOK AT WATCH COMPLICATIONS

On 10.10, we celebrate World Watch Day, an occasion to look more closely at the ingenuity behind fine watchmaking.

In watchmaking, a complication is any function that goes beyond the display of hours, minutes and seconds. Some are designed for everyday practicality, while others are shaped by travel, precision or even the lunar cycle.

GMT & WORLD TIME

Travel introduces another dimension: keeping more than one time zone in view.

A GMT watch typically uses an additional hand and a 24-hour scale to display a second time zone alongside local time. A world-time complication broadens that perspective, allowing the wearer to read the time across multiple cities or regions at once.

The two approach travel differently but share the same purpose: making time across distances easier to follow from the wrist.

MORE THAN HOURS AND MINUTES

From the calendar we follow every day to the time zones we cross and the lunar cycle above us, complications extend the possibilities of a watch far beyond its essential purpose.

At Maison Birks, 10.10 is an opportunity to celebrate the craftsmanship, precision and imagination behind these functions, and the many ways they continue to enrich the experience of fine watchmaking.
